We (The People) successfully struck down SOPA before the Internet as we know it became just like China. Now, Congress is attempting to sneak another bill down the pipeline that is far more damaging. CISPA, the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act will allow (and encourage) companies to freely share any information they have on any individual both with themselves and the Federal government, with complete immunity from civil or criminal lawsuits.
Unlike SOPA the burden of policing the Internet does not fall on social media companies. I thought Facebook and others had our backs when they protested the SOPA/PIPA bills, but actually they were just protecting themselves. We have a bill that will be voted on in less than 2 weeks that shreds the 4th Amendment and allows the government unrestricted access to any personal online information and it has support! What happened to search warrants? What happened to reasonable expectation of privacy? How can companies like Facebook, Verizon, and AT&T support the government tapping into emails, messages, and the massive information that they hold? They don't care about our privacy, only their profits.
I urge everyone AT A MINIMUM to sign this online petition in protest of this bill: http://www.avaaz.org/en/stop_cispa/
If you're up for it, write / call your Senators and legislators - http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm
Nag them to death and let them know that giving up rights in the name of "cybersecurity" is NOT something we will tolerate.
I’d be interested if anyone has more effective ideas to get this message across to the generally apathetic Facebook population.
